The National Education Association (NEA) created the Partnership for 21st Century Skills (P21) in 2002, they began to create their “Framework for 21st Century Learning” that identified 18 essential skills as aspects of education in the 21st-century. But, it soon became apparent that the skills did not provide enough focus and, in 2004, the four C’s of 21st-century skills were created. They include:

  • Communication
  • Collaboration
  • Critical thinking
  • Creativity1
